The wait is over, Amtrak has announced that the new NextGen Acela trains will enter revenue service starting Thursday, August 28, along the ever-popular Northeast Corridor route between Boston, New York City, and Washington, DC.
The newest generation of Acela trains includes 28 brand-new trains coming online through 2027 with more available seats per train, 27% per departure, and an expanded schedule on weekdays and weekends as more of the new trainsets enter service. Five trainsets will be in service initially, with more trains joining the fleet over the next two years.

“NextGen Acela is more than a new train—it’s an evolution of travel,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “In just a few weeks, history will be made with the debut of NextGen Acela as we launch a new standard for American train travel.”
The new NextGen Acela offers an elevated experience, with features and amenities that today’s savvy travelers expect, plus everything they need to be productive along the way: free, high-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, as well as individual power outlets and reading lights.

The new trains will continue to feature both Business and First Class options as found on the present Acela service, but with a much more modern-day feeling, atmosphere, and more. Business Class features 2-and-2 seating with grey and blue accents, while First Class features 2-and-1 seating with grey and orange accents.
First Class provides an exceptional experience with Metropolitan Lounge access, boarding made easy by the dedicated car at the front of the train, spacious seating, including solo seats, and at-seat meal service, featuring the dishes of James Beard award-winning restaurateur, Stephen Starr.

NextGen Acela elevates onboard dining with expanded selections, featuring high-quality food and beverages. In Cafe Acela, the full-service attendant will assist customers with their purchase of new, fresh items, hot favorites, snacks, and a variety of beverages to suit every need. New to Cafe Acela is the addition of grab-and-go self-service for quick and easy checkout. Cart service will also travel the aisles on select departures with popular drinks and food, enabling customers to purchase refreshments at their seats.

Amtrak offers a straightforward approach to booking, seat selection, itinerary management, and even changes in the event of disruptions through the Amtrak mobile app, Amtrak website, and at station kiosks. As the official launch date approaches, customers should look for more information from Amtrak about how to locate and select the NextGen Acela train options. In the coming months, Amtrak will be operating both the current Acela equipment and the NextGen Acela trains as the new trains transition into the fleet.
