Picture this: you’re cycling through the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, but instead of huffing and puffing up a steep incline, you’re enjoying a smooth, level ride. Sound good? Then get ready to discover the Ecusta Trail, a brand-new greenway that’s already a massive hit in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Opened in late July, the first six-mile section of this paved trail is a “linear park” that follows a former railway line, making it perfect for everyone from serious runners to families on a leisurely bike ride. It’s wide, flat, and welcoming to walkers, runners, skateboarders, and even your four-legged friends.
The trail starts in downtown Hendersonville and winds its way to the community of Horse Shoe. Along the way, the scenery changes from bustling downtown streets to peaceful pine forests, open pastures, and even lush bamboo groves. You’ll catch glimpses of the rippling Shaw Creek and, on a clear day, the majestic Mount Pisgah in the distance.
From Railroad to Recreation
The Ecusta Trail is more than just a path; it’s a testament to history and community. The route was once a working railroad built in 1895, carrying everything from passengers to paper goods from the Ecusta Paper Corporation. After the line went dormant in 2002, a group of dedicated advocates worked for years to transform the corridor into the recreational space it is today. By the end of the decade, the trail is expected to extend to nearly 20 miles, connecting Hendersonville all the way to the town of Brevard.

Sights and Sips Along the Way
One of the best things about the Ecusta Trail is that it’s designed to be a destination. The communities along the path have embraced the trail, with new businesses popping up in anticipation of its opening.
- Hendersonville Trailhead: The trail begins at the Welcome Center on Main Street, where you can park, use the restrooms, fill your water bottle, and grab information about the area.
- Lennox Station: About a mile from the Main Street trailhead, this cool, converted industrial space is a can’t-miss stop. You can grab a coffee, pick up some fresh food, or enjoy a craft beer at the brewery. If you didn’t bring your own ride, Venture Ecusta offers bike rentals, including e-bikes. Stop by the Ecusta Market & Café at Lennox Station, a neighborhood gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
- The Crossroads: The trail’s current endpoint in Horse Shoe is home to an upscale restaurant and a lively, rock-and-roll-themed bar with a great outdoor deck.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day trip or an active family adventure, the Ecusta Trail has something for everyone. And with its flat grade and easy access, it’s an excellent place for new cyclists to get back in the saddle.
